HIGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL BREAK-UP. The annual breaking-up ceremony of the Wairarapa High School took place in the Municipal Hall last evening. Mr T. Jordan, chairman of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board, presided. The chairman, in the course of his remarks, stated that the year had witnessed a steady march of progress, but •they were not yet satisfied. Dr. Marsden referred to his visit to the opening of the school, when he had asked the people not to judge the school until it had been going for four or five years. That time had arrived, and he declared that the school had been an unqualified success. In a word to the pupils who were leaving, Dr. Marsden stated that the problem of what occupation to take up was occupying tho minds of psychologists and mothers all over the world. It was difficult at the present time to give vocational guidance, as most of the professions were overcrowded and the whole country was ovor-businessed —there were far too many shops of every kind.' He dealt with various aspects of education. A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Mr P. M. Compton, a member of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board, who thanked Dr. Marsden for his efforts on behalf of the school while Assistant-Director of Education. The vote of thanks was carried bv .acclamation.

The chairman expressed his thanks to the Principal, to Mrs Uttlev, and to the members of the teaching staff for their devoted service to the school in its manifold activities.

During the evening items were given by the school singing class. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT.

The Principal (Dr. G. H/Uttlcy), in the course of his fifth annual report, stated, inter alia: —The total enrolment during the year has been 295. The year has ended with a roll of 275. The number of boarders that have been in residence at School House during the year has been 46, as against 31 in 1926, and 25 in 1925. Two additional class rooms havo been built during.the year, and this has enabled uS to uso the .science rooms and the library for their proper purpose. Two more rooms arc still needed before our accommodation is complete. Any reference to the lack of ■school buildings would be quito incomplete if an assembly hall were not mentioned. If we are to get this indispensable adjunct to a school like our own, it is quite clear that the Departmental authorities are not going to pay for it; they will draw the plans for tho hall, but the money will have to be raised locally. The pupils of the school are going to set themselves next year to initiate a fund for this work, and they •are surely justified in looking for support from such a rich community as the Wairarapa. Good progress has been made in the development of the school grounds. Wo have now available fivo tennis courts, three basket-ball courts, and six cricket pitches, in addition to practice pitches. During the football season three grounds are at present available. The coming year will see even further progress made, when wo shall have five football grounds, two hockey grounds, four basket-ball courts, and nine cricket pitches. The condition of tho school grounds reflects great credit on the ability of the groundsman, Mr E. Griffin.
