Mr and Mrs 11. Miller and family left Masterton To-day for a month’s holiday at Muritai. Mr 11. F. Green, of Lansdowno, who has been confined to his home by illness '/ for some weeks, is now well on road to recover}*. '‘ < W‘ The engagement is announced of Miss Katherine Thomasen, eldest daughter of Mrs B. Thomasen, of Woodville, to Mr W, S. Symon, of Master-* ton. Mr R. C. Drummond, headmaster of the Masterton Central School, was yesterday presented with a sealskin tobacco pouch from members of the school staff. In the University Examinations held in November last, Mr D. O. Williams, (Wairarapa High School) was successful in passing the first section of the; B.A. degree. Mr Keith R. Jackson, of Hessey St., Masterton, will attain the advanced age of 95 years to-morrow. Ho still' enjoys good health and occasionally walks up to Queen Street. " s Mr R. Yeale, who has resigned from the teaching staff of the Wairarapa High School to take up a position with the Department of Agriculture in Tasmania, will leave New Zealand early in January. ' Mr L. S. Amery arrived at yesterday afternoon. He was ’ a civic reception at the Municipal Theatre. To a large audience he delivered an address on Empire Trade and Empire Migration.

The death occurred at Carterton yesterday of Miss Eliza C. McGuiness. The funeral is to take place to-mor-row, leaving the residence of Mr W. J. Dyer, Lincoln Road, Carterton, at one o’clock for the Clarevillo Oeme-f tcry.

It ■is officially announced that the King has approved the appointment of Mr James McNeill as Governor-General of the Irish Free State, in succession to Mr Timothy Healy, whose term of office will shortly expire. Mr McNeill was a member of the committee which drafted the Constitution of the Irish Free State in 1923, and subsequently became High Commissioner of the Free State in London, which position "he has held until now. The teachers of the MastertolWTest School gathered on Friday to bid well to members of the teaching whose engagements terminate at the end of this year. These are Misses M. G. Kane, M. Y. E. Yates, Z. A. Acker-: man, A C. Christian and Mr C. W. Penney. Miss Kane, frho will leave shortly for England, was the recipient of cheque from her fellow teachers. In making the presentation, tho headteacher, Mr H. Miller, voiced the regret of the whole teaching staff in losing the genial companionship of Miss Kane who has shown during her three years’ association with the school a fine feeling of comradeship with her fellow teachers and a sympathetic appreciation of her pupils’ difficulties. Miss Y. Ray also added the regret of the lady members on her departure. At the “break-up” ceremony in the afternoon the chairman of the committee, Mr J. Y. Gordon, presented a travelling rug to Miss Kane as a mark of the children’s appreciation. On her. departure she carries with her tho best wishes for future happiness in her.new home.
