SKETCH EXHIBITION.

MASTERTON CLUB’S DISPLAY. The annual exhibition of the Alastcrton Sketch Club, hold in the Savage Club Boom yesterday afternoon and last ••evening, was highly successful and attracted a. large attendance. As far as the. work of club members is concerned, a large proportion of the sketches were good of their class and kind. Some wore of a higher order of artistic merit, and even in the case of the less finished work there were Tew examples that did not show promise of better things to follow. Competent critics who have had opportunities of observing the work of members of the Mastcrton Sketch Club from year to year, declare that this year’s sketches show a distinct advance 'em the work of the past, and that the standard set.this year is high. Those who are in a position to institute comparisons at the same time affirm that the work tfe&t is being done by local amateur arflls compares very favourably indeed with that done in similar conditions, or in some cases in circumstances of greater advantage, in other parts of the Dominion. The work generally bore witness to a painstaking study of technique, but i not a few of the sketches reflected a happy freedom of treatment which bore witness to individual gifts. With the exception of a few drawings, all the sketches were in water colour, but a number of the exhibitors undoubtedly would give a good account of themselves in oils. A special section devoted to sketches and pictures by past and present critics of the club, and one or two other artists, added greatly to the value and interest of the exhibition. Amongst these were several noteworthy sketches by Mr T. A. Cormack. There were several examples of the work oi( Miss Turner, who has evidently profited not a little from her recent studies in London and Paris Mrs A. Avery was represented.jg|y several really delightful pictures JPlrlowers. Airs F. 11. Taylor, the club’s present critic, had several sketches marked by distinct originality. Sketches of hill country, and of a sunlit street in Sydney, the work of Miss O. J. Callanan, Art Mistress of the Technical School, wore noteworthy for their mellow tones and excellent composition. Other interesting exhibits were two bead studies by Miss 11. "Wilkie, Art Mistress at Solway College, and several pleasing seascapes by Air Basil Honour, of Wellington.
