MASTERTON HARRIERS.

SATURDAY’S RACE. The experiment of. the Masterton Harrier Club in promoting a series of grouped friendly races is proving a great success, as w r ell as being beneficial to every runner concerned. On Saturday a long course of approximately eight and a half miles was used, and most of the starters completed the full distance in good condition. The race proved a triumph for Barrer, a visiting cross-country runner from Christchurch, who w T as allowed to start with the first group which left, and finally won by a good margin from S. Carr. Hunter and Parnell again set the paper trail, and this led from the Masterton Park to the hospital, across the .Ruamahunga Bridge to the foothills of Mr G. Shaw’s property at Te Ore Ore, then working back to connect up with the outgoing trail at Te Ore Ore Pa, and finally to the Park. The four packs of runners left at varying intervals, and it was not until the half-way mark had been reached that the back men became prominent and began to move up rapidly. However, Barrer, N. Winhall and Pointon, running in that order, w T e,re still in the lead with three miles to go. Carr and Wink, running strongly, were catching the leaders quickly and with a short distance to go they overtook first Pointon and then Winhall, but found the task of catching Barrer, who had run well all the way, impossible. The final placing were: Barrer, 1; Carr, 2; Wink, 3; N. Winhall, 4; and Pointon, 5.
