APPRENTICES PROBLEM.
POSITION IN MASTERTON. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Combined Apprenticeship Committee was held in the Masterton Technical School on Saturday evening, Mr P. W. Martin (Principal of the Technical School) presicWA ing. Mr Hanlon, the local five of the Labour Department,' .attended. The plumbers, carpenters and joiners, and painters’ trades were well represented. An interesting discussion on matters affecting the training of apprentices took place. It was decided to confer with the local Defence authorities to ascertain if some minor changes could be made for Technical School pupils attending parades. Mr Hanlon described the efforts made by the Department to find suit-; able employment for boys leaving school. Owing to slackness in some of the trades, a number of local boys desiring to learn those trades had been unable to secure apprenticeship. It was decided to wait until the beginning of next year, when the actual number of boys on the waiting list could be ascertained, and employers a preached with a view to placing flfvv many boys as possible. Approval was expressed of the proposal of the New Zealand Technical Education Board to issue certificates to boys qualifying in various trades, and it was decided to write accordingly to the board.
