POSITION IN DUNEDIN. MORE ACUTE. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) DUNEDIN, ■ Monday. The local members of Parliament have telegraphed to the Acting-Prime Minister that, “Whilst appreciating your telegram that additional men would be employed on the Portobello road, the position disclosed shows the situation to bo acute, and likely to be accentuated owing to the City Council having dis-chnrged an additional hundred men. The council has expended £50,000 during the past six months, thereby giving employment to over 3(JO men. Their funds are now exhausted, and we urge the Government to render further help in meeting the situation. The citizens have done their utmost to meet the conditions, but the funds are now overdrawn by nearly £sooo.’’ AUCKLAND’S UNEMPLOYED. AUCKLAND, Monday. The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, attended a meeting of the unemployed committee. The Minister said that at. present there were 1000 more men on public works than arranged for at the- beginning of the season. He had his own views on land policy, 1 and thought something comprehensive would be done next year. The immigration question was Iso being considered. He asked for the fullest particulars in regard to the usual occupations of r the men seeking work. He had received information that 25 men had been placed at Mercer, and 50 would be placed at Westfield.
