PROHIBITION LEAGUE.

ANNUAL MEETING. ‘The annual meeting of the Masterton Prohibition. League was held last night in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Mr -G. W. Moriee presiding over a good attendance. I.t was resolved that a convention, be held in Masterton on Saturday, October 16tli, to discuss the organisation of the Masterton and Wairarapa electorates. The election of officers resulted in Mr G. W. Moriee being appointed president; the ministers accepting the platform of the New Zealand Alliance, vice-presidents; Mr G. Bates, secretary and treasurer; with Messrs Hyde, Pearce, Watson, Allen, Misses Sutherland and Jackson as an executive committee. Mr H. Grinstead, of the 'field staff of ,the New Zealand Alliance, .delivered a i short address on the present demands of the prohibition party, and the proposals made by the Premier in his recent Licensing Bill. It was an amazing thing, Mr Grinstead said, that such proposals could too made when year after year the (vote of the peopl'd had clearly demonstrated that restriction of the trade and not extension was their wish. Yet these proposals would give a six-years’ license and a restoration vote on a simple majority, with a very large increase in the number of licenses. Fortunately, such proposals had had to be withdrawn. The New Zealand Alliance demanded a two-issue ballot paper, and no extension of the three-year poll, and on no account would they enter into any discussion with the representatives of the liquor traffic. They 'were prepared to say again to the Government what their demands were, and to fight for them until they got them. A new Bill would be introduced next session, and it was up to prohibitionists to see that their representatives in Parliament knew their wishes.

In conclusion, tlio visiting speaker spoke of the work amongst the young people throughout the Dominion, a branch of tlio work that was receiving very special attention from the Alliance.

A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Grinstead brought the proceedings to a close., ,
