Dr. Edward Benes, in liis opening address to the League Assembly, claimed that the year’s record showed the increasing- amplitude of the League ’-s work, its fresh responsibilities, and ever-greater service to peace, . but he would refrain srom sounding a note of triumph or official -optimism because there were obstacles which they could not hope to surmount without difficulties. Substantial results bad been acliie|-ed regarding disarmament. They had been concerned with that since ' the League was created. Doubtless, the disarmament problem was un-solvable ill its entirety, but they were appreciably nearer the goal. He trusted that Spain’s noble sentiments would prevent her abandoning a share in the common responsibilities. Ho also -hoped that Turkey would become a. member. All would -welcome her. M. Nintchiteh, Jugo-Slav Foreign Minister, has been elected President of the League Assembly, by 42 votes out of 48. A CLAIM ABANDONED. (Received Wednesday, 9.50 a.m.) GENEVA, Tuesday. The C-anadian delegation has decided to abandon their claim to a seat on the League Council.
