SURF BOAT FATALITY.
WIDOW GETS COMPENSATION. In the Arbitration. Court at Wellington yesterday,, a case was he ir 1 in which Lilian Bertha Carney, widow of. John: Carney, who lost his life r.hen. landing cargo from the steamer Pakura at Akitio on June 10th, claimed com-j ( pensation from Messrs Richardson and . C0.,-Ltd,, owners of. the vessel. ~ The evidence showed that the surf boat was swamped by heavy seas, deceased being’ the only occupant, who was. not saved. . Mr P. .T. O’Regan submitted that plaintiff and her two infant -children were totally dependent on deceased. Mr G. G. Watson, who appeared for Richardson and Co., stated that the only reason the case had come before the Court was that .the widow resided in England, and* substantiation of bar marriage to, and dependency npoi* John Carney, were required. ™ Judgment for plaintiff for tho full amount claimed, with costs £l2 12s, was returned.
