WEEK-END SPORT.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. CARTERTON v. FEATHERSTON, At the Carterton showgrounds last Saturday, Carterton had an. easy win over Featherston by 30 points to 6. Featherston’.s severe defeat was primarily due to their lack of form, and also to the fat that several of their players, notably the Donald brothers, were* absentees for one reason and anotlijc’,'-. This was also FeatherstO’- ’,*> first appearance, they having drawn the bye the -previous Saturday. Carterton played a much better game than they did against Stars. The work of the forwards was more finished, while the inclusion of Boston made all the difference to the backs, his sure handling being a feature throughout, while in attack he proved an efficient link between the half and the wingers. The Featherston forwards held their end up fairly well in the first half, but as their form failed, they were simply overwhelmed by the Red pack, who were better in every department of the game. With a forward or two included, and several players out of their accustomed places, the Featherston backs did about as well as anyone would expect under the circumstances but better things will undoubtedly be shown when the full team gets into action. The ground was a bit.slippery after the recent rain, while showers throughout the game made the ball very greasy and difficult to handle. Featherston kicked off. From the opening exchanges Denby misfielded a long kick and before he could recover the ball, J. Burt, the Featherston three-quarter, sprinted down the wing, gathered in the ball, and had scored near the corner before the game was more than two minutes old. Cundy missed the kick. Featherston 3 Carterton 0

A solid combined drive by the Bed pack soon had Featherston on the defensive, C. Buck (at full-back) saving a dangerous situation by forcing. From near midfield, Cundy ran througk and sent Hutana away, but the latter gave Gray a bad pass. Featherston swarmed round, and off-side pljiy by a defending player gave Cundy a chance from a good position. He made no mistake, and the score read — Featherston 6 Carterton 0

•Parker neatly stopped a Red forward attack by whipping the ball but to Cundy, -who found the line well down. Featherston pressed, but Boston, splendidly marking a high centring kick in front of the goal, saved an almost certain score. Fitzgerald missed goaling twice from free kicks. The ■Red forwards were now combining bettor, and after several assaults on the Featherston line, were rewarded. From ;i loose rush, Anderson scored after everal defenders had missed the rolling ball. Fitzgerald missed the kick at goal. Carterton 3 Featherston 6

A forward rush led by Reid and F. Burling looked dangerous but the latter kicked too hard, and Featherston forced. From a scrum on the Featherston line, Hart worked the blind side, but was held up. Soon after Hart gave Monerieff a good pass, 'but the latter was pulled down short of the line. The Carterton, forwards went across again in a wild rush, but after several players on both sides had missed the greasy ball, it went out of touch, in goal. Straggling play followed till half time, Carterton doing“most of the attacking.

The Carterton forwards started the second spell with great dash, and after repeated attacks, K. Fair-brother was found over tho line with the ball under him. Fitzgerald converted, and Carterton led for the first time. Carterton 8 Featherston 6 The Carterton backs then started a passing rush. On reaching Boston, th<j latter tried to pot a goal. Several defenders missed the ball as it rolled along behind the line, and it lay clear for Biddle to,score. Fitzgerald missed the kick. Carterton 11 '... Featherston 6 There was solid forward bullocking for a good spell, in which Carterton maintained the advantage, and Fairbrother scored again from a scramble. Fitzgerald’s kick was disallowed after the placer and kicker had both handled the ball. Carterton 14 Featherston 6 From the kick-off, Featherston revived a little, and Cundy showed up in a good solo run. Then Carterton drove home another rush, -Which ended in F. Burling scoring. Fitzgerald missed. Carterton 17 Featherston 6 From the Featherston line, Cundy ran to nearly halfway. He gave Gray a pass, but Hart came across and with a good tackle stopped the movement. Carterton were soon back, and from another scramble, Reid scored a try. Fitzgerald missed. Carterton 20 Featherston 6 Then F. Burling galloped through the ruck and scored his second try in an easy position. Fitzgerald goaled. Carterton 25 Featherston 6 In the final stages, Carterton had Featherston beaten to a standstill, and Boston scored the last try, which Fitzgerald converted, making the final score —

Rugby in the Rain.

Carterton 30 Featherston 0 Churchouse, Moncrieff and Reid played well in the Carterton forwards, while Hart, Boston and Biddle did well in the backs. Bonaldson, Mulcahy, Wilson and I. Donald were the best of the Featherston pack, while Cundy and J. Burt were the pick of the backs. MASTERTON v. MARTINBOROUGH. GAME PLAYED IN THE RAIS. I NORTHERNERS A LITTLE TOO GOOD. The Masterton (black) and Martinborough (green) seniors met on the Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon. Rain fell practically throughout the whole of the game, and as the ground had already been churned up by the lower-grade curtain-raiser, the senior match resolved itself largely into a mud scramble.

Martinborough kicked off, and the Masterton forwards immediately rushed the ball to their opponents’ line, a good scoring chance being spoiled by off-side play. Martinborough forced. From the kick-out, the Masterton forwards manoeuvred the ball to the corner, but it went out of bounds. Willoughby was caught off-side, and a good chance of scoring was lost. Martinborough cleared their line and worked the ball towards their opponents’ goal. A lucky speculator kick by a MasteTton player cleared, and Martinborough were again soon in difficulties, having to force down. Give-and-take play in the forwards followed, and then the Masterton backs put in a good run, which was spoiled by a player getting off-side. Mick Willoughby was noticeable for a good solo effort, carrying the oval to near the line. From here the ball was kicked across in front of the goal. Rose dived for it, but missed, and a Martinborough player forced. A great rush by the Masterton forwards shortly afterwards saw the southern full-back miss, but tlie ball went out near the corner flag. Masterton continued to hammer away, and were almost over, but a pass near the line was forward. A Martinborough player got off-side, and this gave Yates a chance to land a penalty goal. Masterton 3 Martinborough 0

After a lot of forward rushes, some long kicks were exchanged, ending in VVhall trying to catch, hut the ball went out off his shoulder. Shortly afterwards a mark was kicked a crossfield, and Jack Hughes snapped the ball up smartly and dived over. Yates added the extra points. Masterton 8 Martinborough 0

Shortly afterwards a breach by a Martinborough player gaves Yates another chance, but a good kick just missed. Half-time was then called. Masterton commenced the second .spell vigorously, and the Southerns weTe penned up for some time. Eventually the Greens cleared their line, and swarmed down the field, a dangerous rushbeing saved by Yates putting in a nice line kick. Masterton soon returned to the attack, and the Southerners forced. Ryan, who had been playing a sterling game for Masterton, received an injury and had to retire, being replaced by Maekley. Shortly afterwards a Martinborough player was cheek, and had to be .carried off. The cheek, an dhad to be carried off. The Masterton forwards hammered away at the Green line, until the Southerners’ half-back secured from a scrum and kicked well down-field. Chapman followed up and secured jiossession, but was collared when beginning to look dangerous. Martinborough were now playing much better, and the Blacks were obliged to force. Shortly after the kick-out, a Masterton player was penalised, and L. Roach kicked a goal.

Master-ton 8 Martinborough 3 Masterton returned to the attack, ■but the Greens cleared with a lucky kick across the field. After several scrums, the Greens cleared their line, and their backs were associated in a little passing bout. Yates saved with a good kick. Coming out from the ruck Willoughby kicked and followed Tight through, but the Green full-back saved. The pressure was continued, and Martinborough forced. After considerable ragged play, the Greens carried the ball to their opponents’ line, but a good pass was mulled by one of the Green backs. This was the Southerners’ last opportunity, for the Black forwards then used their weight to advantage and forced their way to the Greens' territory. The ball was kicked over the Southerners’ line, and after Willoughby and a Martinborough player had both failed to touch down the gresay ball, Taylor raced for it and

scored Masterton’s second try. Yates converted. Masterton 13 Martinborough *o The play was of a give-and-take nature in the mud until'the final whistle, no further scores being registered. Mr A. E. Freeman was referee. RED STAR v. GREYTOWN. ASSOCIATION CODE. As the Park Oval is not available for winter games this season, and as other grounds are not offering, the Association footballers have had to accept the paddocks behind the park and below the hospital bridge. On Saturday the Waipoua was in high flood and the ground was practically submerged. Consequently the game between Waingawa and Masterton was postponed, and probably will be played on Saturday.
