DROUGHT BROKEN.

HEAVY RAIN IN AMERICA. (Received Friday, D. 40 a.in.) NEW YORK, Thursday. The drought appears to have broken after a series of heavy rainstorms which have, worked their way from the south along the Atlantic- seaboard to the northern States, then hit the various mid-Western States, and now are touching the Pacific Coast, notably California, where they are accompanied by heavy fogs.Florida received one of the heaviest precipitations known, for years; more than. 14 inches of rain falling in the Miami area within 12 hours. New York and the New England States had live- days’ continuous rains, accompanied by winds. The southern and northern storms did considerable damage, several lives being lost in Florida. The property losses will amount to millions of dollars. The effect of rains generally has been beneficial but they came too late for many places, where the- crops were ruined owing to the lack of moisture. T. M. Bell, member of the House of Representative, conferring with President Coolidgc, informed the President that more than one million people were facing starvation in North Georgie this winter, unless the Government relief the drought having caused wholesale crop failures in twenty counties, and partial failures in twelve others. — Aus. and X.Z.
