Wairarapa Daily Times. [ESTABLISHED OVER 50 YEARS.] WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1925. LABOUR WAKING UP.

According to t-lio cables during the past fe wdnys, the Labour Party in Aust:alia is engaging in a campaign, the object of which is to eliminate the extremists from its ranks. The policy is certainly.in the interests of trade unionism. There are two choices before Labour, not only in Australia, but in New Zealand. One choice will allow of the progressive development of the unions as economic units, primarily concerned with the advancement of the social, economic and industrial status of their members. It will permit of the fitting of the unions to play a greater part in the shaping of the industrial policy of the country, until there is established a machinery which will express more adequately than any now existing that genuine partnership which is the enduring basis of national prosperity. That is* the line of natural development of trade unions after the English model. The alternative is an alien conception of progress, not by evolution, but by revolution; the establishment of a political dictatorship, the means for which shall be provided by the organised strength of trade unionism. Trade unionism would thus become primarily a political organisation, working for tlie overthrow of capitalism bythc. violent means of a class war to the death.
