STATE SHIPPING.
HEAVY LOSSES. SUFFERED BY AMERICA. (Received 'Tuesday, 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Mon day. The losses on the Government’s merchant fleet operations in 1925 are estimated at £6,000,000, according to a report presented by the Shipping Board to Congress to-dav. The report urges Government aid, “Either through preferential tariff duties, preferential tonnage dues or subsidies more or less direct,” in order to secure the operation and continued existence of the merchant ships under private ownership.—Aus. and N.Z.
