FEATHERSTON ACCIDENT.

THE INQUEST OPENED^ CONSTABLE SWAN’S EVIDENCE, An inquest on Kilvert Lewis Alattlicws, killed in the railway crossing accident at Featherston on Saturday opened at Featherston yesterday before Mr. E. G. Eton (District Coroner). 'Frederick G-willini Matthews, uncli> of deceased, said that deceased was 22 years old and had been in good health, llis eyesight and hearing were good. Walter Kilvert Matthews (witness’s brother) and deceased left .Petone by car at 2.10 p.m. on Saturday. He did not know who was driving, but he knew that deceased had been learning to drive. Witness’s brother was an. experienced driver. He was rather dull of hearing. Thomas C. Swan, police constable, said ho heard the train whistle and then ho heard a crash. He rnßtl down to the Fitzherbert street crosiung and saw the train drawn up .and the smashed motor car. Deceased was lying about 17 yards and Air. W. K. Matthews five yards from the crossing. Dr Sharp was also on the scene, and gave the cause of death as a tract* red skull and other injuries. Witness hail not been able to interview Air. AA. K.
