Sir John Luke intimates that he wilt contest the Wellington North seat afc the forthcoming election. . - Teh appointment of Mr A. S. Louisson as deputy-registrar of the Supreme Court at Nelson, has been gazetted. The betrothal of Princess Mafalda, second daughter of the King of Italy, to Prince Philip of Hesse, ds announced. Princess Mafalda is the second daughter of the King and Queen of Italy. She is 22. Prince Philip is a member of the ruling family which abdicated when Hesse, with other German States, turned republican in 1918. He is 28.

Yesterday afternoon a large gathering of the members, of the ladies’ Ranfurly Club entertained at afternoon tea., in the Club rooms, their president, Mrs. H. H. Beetham, who is: about to visit Europe, and her with a travelling rug and a cushion as a mark of esteem and in ajipreeiation of valuable services rendered ta the Club. Miss Vallance, in a happy speech, made the- presentation, which was feelingly responded to by Mrs. Beetham.

A large number of friends attended' the Home of Compassion at Island Bay yesterday to congratulate the Rev. Mother Alary Joseph Aubert on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday, when she was presented with a purse containing £2OO. Among the many gifts was a beautiful birthday, cake, IS inches in diameter, fringed with ninety diminutive .candles —one for each year of the Rev. Mother’s life, sent by Mrs R. Dwyer, and a profusion of flowers from many friends, including a lovely bouquet from, the .Public Trustee.
