INFANTILE PARALYSIS.

DOMINION RETURNS POSITION MUCH IMPROVED. Only ten cases of infantile paralysis were reported throughout the Dominion during the period of 48 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday. They were as follow: — Auckland, I (Hamilton). Wellington, 3 (Riverlea 1, Dannevirke I, To Horo 1). Canterbury, 5 (Christchurch 3, Mainland I, Ellesmere .1). Otago L (Dunedin). CHRISTCHURCH. CIIRLSTOII LURCH, Alondav. Since noon on (Saturday, five cases of infantile paralysis have been reported in Canterbury, four in the city. A girl aged six years, of Doyleston, died in Christchurch Hospital, on Sunday evening, a few hours after admission. Although new cases of infantile paralysis continue to occur in the city area, there are grounds for hope that the epidemic is slowly but surely nearing the end of its course. Several of the cases reported in the past week started in a mild form, and parents were unaware that anything was wrong until some time after the patients were first affected.

The number of actual new eases shows a steady decline, and it is hoped tho cold snap at the week-end may have had a beneficial effect in bringing the epidemic nearer to its close. AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Alouday. Three new cases of infantile paralysis are reported in the Auckland district. Dr Hughes (Medical Officer) says the position in the city and suburbs has improved considerably. The nninbci of patients in hospital is largely reduced, and the public may expect a few cases during the ensuing month, but the worst over. EPIDEMIC RESTRICTIONS. WHEN WILL THEY BE LIFTED? ‘‘The heads of the Health Department will m*?et on Friday morning next,” stated Dr. T. McKibbin (Director of Public Hygiene) to a Times representative yesterday afternoon, ‘‘to discuss the continuance or otherwise of tho. epidemic restrictionsrnud meantime we are getting full information from the various health districts regarding the character of the cases reported during Alarcli. ‘‘Some decision will then be arrived at as to the carrying on of the restrictions after Easter, and the date for the re-opening of the schools.
