Mr Robert A. At a meeting of electors of the Auckland East electorate, Mr James-. Stewart was unanimously chosen to contest the Auckland East seat as Reform, candidate at the next election. In view of the honour conferred on Inspector T. T. Hugo by his appointment as a full member of the Institute of British Fire Engineers, the Masterton Fire Board yesterday decided to write congratulating him, especially inview of the fact that he is the only person in Australasia to hold such an honour.

There was a large attendance at the. funeral of the late Mr John the. ceremony at the graveside being performed bv Adjutant Marshall and Ensign Wheeler. Appropriate music was played by the Salvation Army Band, assisted by members of the Municipal Band. A memorial service was held in. the Salvation Army Hall on Sunday evening. , Yesterday morning, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Wellington, the manage was solemnised of Wvnford Orinsby, second son of the late Ilolroyd Beere and Mrs. Holroyd Beere, “Fernlea,’* Wellington, and Mavis Eleanor, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Ross, “Otama,’’ Porangahau. Archdeacon Johnson performed the ceremony, Miss Beryl Ross and Miss Joan Beere attended the bride. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Hotel Ceeil.. Later Mr. and Mrs. Wynford Beere left by car for the north. The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital yesterday, at the age of 58, of Mr Thomas Edward Papps, of Upper Plain. Deecased was born in Gloucestershire, and came to New Zealand 40years ago, residing for the past 30 years in this district. He was a quiet, hardworking man. Deceased leaves a widow, two grown-up sons and one daughter. A, brother is farming in Southern. Hawkgr’s Bay. The funeral leaves the residence at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow for theMasterton Cemtery.

An enjoyable function took place at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. S. on Saturday evening, when a number tbe friends of Mrs. S. H. Conder dered her a farewell social. Musical items were rendered, and at a suitable break after supper, Mrs. Rigg, on behalf of Mrs. Cornier’s lady friends, presented her with a handsome basketshaped vase. Dancing was indulged in till midnight, when the gathering, concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Sync,” and a general expression of the wish that Mr, and Mrs. Conder would . enjoy a happy and prosperous time in their new home at Taihape.
