WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Waira rapa South County Council was held at Carterton on Saturday, there being present: Crs. T. V. Moore (chairman), R, Cooper, 1). McGregor, G. Foreman, J, Ilodder, F. Court, Y\ r . Renall and G. lE. Allen.

The treasurer reported a credit balance of £2867 17s 6d. Receipts for the month £709 Os lid. Accounts totalling £1509 13s 2d were passed for payment. The Taratahi Dairy Company risked permission to put in a pipe drain from their factory on Hughes’ Lines, along Hughes’ Line to the main road, thence along the main road to connect with a water course at the Racing Club’s property. The proposed drain to be as an overflow for the company’s water race only.—Granted.

The No. 10 (Wairarapa) District Highways Council advised that notification had been received that skeleton specifications were in the hands of the Government printer. The Public Works Department advised having remitted £512 Ss 3d to the county fund, grants for work done. The Public. Works Department asked the length of road which it is proposed to metal, as it is not clear as to how the Council has arrived at its estimate of £654. —Supplied. The Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged application for permission to borrow £7OOO under section 7 Local Bodies Finance Act, 1921-1922. Mr. Coleman Phillips, Carterton, wrote complaining of a pipe culvert beneath the water race, and asking that the matter be given attention. The water race overseer reported upon the complaint and the position is to be pointed out to Mr. Phillips. The ranger reported having dealt with 18 head oLstock. WATER RACES. The Carrington water race overseer reported having completed clearing the races, and general cleaning commenced. The Taratahi water race overseer reported that wind and rain had caused a lot of trouble with the intake. The floods have shifted the boulder tank and it will have to be replaced. A bad leak at Kokotau had been repaired. Another bad leak in Moore Bros, had been repaired. Several of the races have been cut off through the school children putting dams in the races. The fluming at Gray Bros.’ sprung a leak and the race running in to Daysli Bros and C. Campbell’s was cut off until repaired. It was decided to offer to assist the Kawlia ta settlers to the extent of £SO to do the 111 chains of metalling, estimated to cost £BO.

The temporary bridge at Booth’s is to be gone on with. The overseer was instructed to clear slips on Bluff road. It was decided to arrange with Mr. G. Brown to act as watchman at the Kokotau bridge. • OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer reported, inter alia: — Dale.field Riding. —This would bo an expensive matter. Maungaraki Riding.—Metal has been raked in and water tables cleaned with the grader on Ponataki, Ahiaruhe, and Longbush roads and a little patch metalling done on the latter road. A bridge near Riddell’s has been repaired. Cleaning water tables and general maintenance has been attended to on Admiral, Flat Point and Craigie Lea roads. The point on Flat Point road near MeKelvic’s has been taken down. I would recommend that the water-' tables on Admiral road from the tin shed down to about half a mile be ploughed up and removed. At this point it is impossible for further culverts to be put in to advantage. General. —The metal has been raked in on Main roads north and south, and Dalefield road. The crusher is still at work on the main road north, and 660 cubic yards of metal have been crushed to date. Water tables have been cleaned and general maintenance* attended to on the East Coast rqad. Cummins has finished his contract on this road and proposed to start Driscoll road immediately. Fail-brother and Matson are making good progress with the Kalwhata road job, having delivered 146 2-3 cubic yards to 25th inst. The county men are making good progress with the metalling on the Kaiwliata road. The bridge on the East Coast road near Cotter’s store requires attention.
