NEW COMETS.
MAY BECOME BRIGHTER,
’The two new comets which have recently made their appearance in the heavens were observed by the Government Astronomer (Dr. C. E. Adams) and Mr C. G. G. Berry at the Wellington Observatory last night. The first of the comets was discovered on March 23rd, being reported by the Central Astronomical Bureau at Copenhagen, and the second on March 24th. Dr. Adams stated that both bodies could be seen in the 9in telescope. The first comet was exceedingly faint, and its position was 11 hr 37min right ascension, and 2deg llmin north declination. The second was brighter, and visible also in the 2in telescope. It showed a stellar nucleus, but no visible tail. Its position was 13hr 25min right ascension, and 21deg 24min south declination.
Air G. V. Hudson, of Karori, subsequently reported by telephone that he had seen the brighter comet with his 4in telescope, and gave the position the same as quoted. As the comets approach the sun they should become brighter.
ANOTHER COMET FOUND,
IT AW ERA, This. Day
Two independent local observers, Messrs. G. M. Townsend and P. Gawith, last night picked up both the new comets reported from Copenhagen. Air. Townsend also found a larger comet on Saturday evening.
