MINERS’ WAGES
A LABOUR BILL REJECTED.
(Received Saturday, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, Friday
The House of Commons, by 208 votes to 143, rejected a motion by the Labourite Mr Walsh for the second reading the Coal Mines Minimum Wage Bill, proposing a minimum rate of Jls per shift for •underground workers of 18 years of age or over.
Mr. G. R. Lane Fox (Conservative) declared that the carrying out of the provisions of the bill would increase the cost of coal production by two to three shillings and would mean that more pits would have to close and thousands more men be added to the unemployed ranks.
Mr. T. Capo (Labour M.Pj for Workington) declared that if the bill was rejected the Labourites would agitate until they enabled the workers to have a fair standard of living.—Reuter.
