FOOTBALL.

jCHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTERTON v. CARTER TOX. These old-time rivals met at tRc Memorial Park on Saturday a-terno.n under ideal football conditions Uere was a time when a contest c the two teams provided spectaciUa football, some of wluoh was the best city standard. Those w.. days when Joe O'Leary, the late Pat O’Leary Dave Logan, Edgar 1 ’ gob &man (Jo tetoeed Salurday’s fame), the late Clarrie j Jenkins, -Paddy’ lv Warner, Jim Conlan and Joe Kllli her played for Masterton, and -- ton had Alf Johnston, the ] late - Lmy Se oa4 cidwallader (North Islaml “Jo the late Art Cadwallader, “Loxtv” -Armstrong (New Zealand rep.), fr Bert MoKenm, Jaek McKenzie, and Ted McKenzie, itsranks The public were consequently provided with a tough struggle dashing forward ’ rushes of Caiterto Sg. countered So e ,,y coSe“s M d excitement. - Last Saturday’s game, howeier, showed that the Carterton forwards are hut a shadow of their former selves and the Masterton baek^eSv- ■ nothing within coo-ee of the O Provided a few flashes of interesting -pla?,. V the second half was a dreary exhijntion devoid of anything approaching decei t football. The backs on b J th slde ® were appalling at times, but the ior ■ wards stuck to their task, and honours were about even in this department Carterton came away, shortiy after the kick off with a series of attacks, which off-side play spoilt and gave relief to Masterton,; who pjayed with the sun, in their faces. McKenzie and O’Dowd did good work in removing play to safety, but the Carterton pack were soon back.again, Nairn eventually relieving the pressure with a line kick. ; The Carterton backs let Masterton through as the result of their mul - ing the ball, and before the spectator, had realised what had happened, Tates : had potted a very fine goal. Masterton 4 Carterton 0 -Carterton came away to the attack, but Innes, Murray, Nicholson and McKenzie put in some , stubborn work. Desmond headed a dribbling rush, but Nicholson aifd Murray * removed- the scene of play. . More muddling by the Carterton backs let Masterton through again, and subsequently Yates sent to Murray* to Wilkinson, but the latter mulled. A couple of force, downs by Carterton were the- next noticeable happenings, one being off a “ pot ’ ’ by Barnes. -Bambry made a good run for Carterton, and placed Masterton on the defensive. A vigorous Carterton forward attack was followed !by Yates finding the line. Masterton attacked, but the Carterton pack cleared. After give and take play, McKenzie gave a capital exhibition of dribbling and subsequently neatly finished off the movement by’ scoring. No goal resulted. Masterton 7.... '• 'Carterton 0 - Some bad play ! by the. Masterton backs was followed by a similar effort; on the part of the Carterton rearguard, and play centred. -Murray .and Willoughby took play into Carterton territory, where Boston saved by a good kick, Boston made a good breakaway from liis own kick, but Yates got him. O’Dowd, Murray and Nicholson came through, but the Carterton pack returned to the attack. Weak play by' the Carterton backs was followed by one of the most sensational runs ever seen on the Park. From a pasS the ball ' went to Nairn near the 25 flag, and the latter set sail for the line, beating the opposition and scoring a great try in the corner after having covered some 75 yards. O-he kick at goal failed. Masterton 10 .Carterton 0

• , The first spell- ended without- further UCOT6# The second speii consisted mostly of an indifferent display of football, and play became monotonous at times. The forwards on each side grafted hard enough, -but the backs could have im»proved very much. The Carterton backs, with the. exception of Bambry and .Boston, were fearful. There was a lack of cohesion among the Masterton rearguard at times, and. Boss, who shaped satisfactorily in the first spell, held on to the ball repeatedly, losing one certain, score through this. The only score in the spell was a well-earn-ed "try by Bambry, who ran through the opposition, and in the attempt to stop him Wilkinson was injured and had to retire, being replaced by Livingstone. Knowles converted the try. Masterton 10 :• • • • Carterton 5 - After the score Masterton became more aggressive for a time, and kept Carterton penned- down near the line. Strenuous play nearly resulted in Masterton scoring. Had Boss anff Watts not been under, the impression that they owned the ball a score may have come Masterton’s way. Then Carterton cleared, and removed play to Masterton -territory, where » a “spec.” by Yates saved. Carterton came away to -the attack again, and vigorous play kept -Masterton busy, Nairn eventually speculating to the side line and easing the -pressure. The remainder of the spell was devoid of anything of interest, and there was no further score. Mr K. Spademan made a good and -impartial Referee. BED STAB v. FEAT-HERSTON. The Bed Star team encountered, ah Featherston on Saturday the strongest fifteen they have yet met in the com- ' petition. Certainly -the Stars were without some of their usual -contingent, Butcher, Beard, Vangioni and McGrud-.. dv being among them, the two latter through injuries received at Greytown. The game was a good clean exhibition of football, but the Star backs

were handicapped in not having Vangioni in his usual place. The Star rearguard was altered somewhat from the usual formation owing to the absentees, and this interfered with theirplay. [Red Star had the best of the first spell, and led at half-time by 11 points to 3 (a try). Bishop kicked two penalty goals, and Wyber scored a try which Bishop converted. ■ in the second half Featherston assumed the aggressive, and, mainly as , t he result, of weak collaring on the part of the Stars, the home team was abe to score four tries during the spell. Hutana, J. Donald, Cundy and Bolton scored for Featherston, Gundy converting two. The game ended in a win for Featherston by 19 ponits to 11. The Star forwards played a solid game, Wyber, Clayton, Wooffindm, Johansen and Willoughby going well. Bishop shaped very well and showed that he is a player above the ordinary. His goal-kicking .was good, and his exhibition demonstrated that he is a sound wet or fine day player. Southey, a new three-quarter, shaped very nicely, and ■•once in form should add strength to the Star attack, as he is fast. Most of the other backs were up to form, though Yangioui’s absence upset the Star attack. On the day’s play Featherston thoroughly deserved their win, and were the better combination. Mr ,H. J. McKenzie was referee.

GLADSTONE v. CARTERTON. At ‘Carterton, Gladstone beat Greyfown by 11 to S. For Gladstone Monerieff (converted by F. Booth) and B. Booth scored tries, and F. Booth kicked a penalty goal. The game was played on a heavy ground, -where the High School forwards showed some brilliant play. Shortly after the kick-off, the forwards rushed up to the Masterton 25 ’s, dribbling the ball well, -till Jago crossed the line with a fine try. Perry failed to convert. The School backs came away with a passing rush, resulting in a try by Rutherford. Perry failed to convert. A free kick brought no material advantage to School. Williams (captain) put in some very brilliant work here, but the chance of inaugurating a good movement was spoilt by some good tackling by Masterton. /: The second spell showed that the High School was fit. This was confirmed by a nice try by McKenzie, which Bob'inson failed -to convert. Welch and McKenzie showed up conspicuously in some forward combination, from which Jago scored, Denbee failing to convert. Denbee saved the situation for School with a ,timely kick, Bobinson and Welch dribbling, then passing to McKenzie, who, after a brilliant run, crossed the line, Bobinson failing to convert. School had -the best of the game, the forwards almost always hooking the ball. The School forwards -broke up quickly and made their combination felt.

HIGH SCHOOL B v. BED STAR. The game was played on No. 3 ground, with the sun at School’s back. Stars pressed -hard for a while, till Kjar potted a goal. School’s backs came along with some nice passing, till Stars, by tackling hard, managed to secure the ball, but unfortunately giving School a free kick. Tullock got the ball over. Later the Star backs got away, and this movement eventually resulted in a score for Stars, which was not converted. The second spell was hard aud willing, the game fluctuating with no advantage till lorns, on tlfe wing, snapped up a pass from Dave Williams, from the “blind,” and, after a really brilliant run, scored under the posts. The score being now—Stars 7, School 6, much excitement ensued till Tullock, with a nice kick, converted. Till the call of time the School pressed the Stars. School thus won- by 8 points to 7. .
