“CROOKED’ RACING.

SYDNEY, Thursday.

Giving evidence at the pony racing enquiry, an ex-joekey named Oscar Pearce said that since he refused to ‘ ‘ pull ’ ’ a horse in a recent race he had been persecuted by the Associated Racing Club stewards, and finally lost his license, which was cancelled. He also described several cases in which horses were doped just before a race, and said he could get a number of fitnesses to' substantiate his statements, but they would not come before the committee as they were afraid of being victimised by the stewards.—Press Assn. TURF TOPICS.

Marqueteur is looking nice and should be ready to show some form at the Christmas meetings.

Velvet King is improving with racing and should be very close to a 'win now.

Rose Martian got the track to suit her at Feilding, but she did not stay on. She had every chance, but perhaps the run will pnprove her.

Boadicea is having a spell at present and she may not be raced again for some time. She has been kept very busy sinee last autumn and has earned a rest.

Economist, who has been lame on and off for some time past, was surprisingly well after his two races at South Canterbury. He is at present having a short spell.

Muraahi finished brilliantly in the big handicap at Feilding, and a stride past the post was well in front of Kareao. On this run he will increase in favour for the Auckland Cup.

Diamond Ring ought to have won the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding, says a Wellington writer, and had she been an easier mare for a small boy .to manage would not have been beaten. She was up with the leaders all the way till two furlongs from home. She then took charge, but got out very wide at the home turn, and that lost her the race.

Bon Spec was very sore after his racing at the South Canterbury meeting, and F. Christinas has decided to give him a spell. When he was first tried over nurd’es, at the Grand National meeting, he showed promising form, but lately he has gone from bad to worse. Probably he will do much better when he comes in again after a rest.

Humboldt was lame after runhtfig in the hurdle race on the first day of the South Canterbury meeting. F. D. Jones has sent' him home, and it is unlikely that he will be persevered with by Mr H. A. Knight. He has shown that he can jump, and after a spell he might pay his way in hunters’ hurdle races next winter.

The Riccarton trainers who contemplate visiting Ellerslie for the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, are commencing to run their horses the reverse way. Sir George Clifford may have a team of four horses for the trip, including Winning Hit and Wild Hind. Mr G. D. Greenwool may be represented by Parody and Gold Town. Two of Mr G. Gould’s lot, Palestrina and Wink, are other possibilities, while R. W. King is preparing Pilliewinkie and Many Kittle for the same trip.
