THE HUMAN OSTRICH.
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST.
STRANGE REVELATIONS.
(Received Thursday, 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, Wednesday.
Strange revelations were made at tha inquest on Private Hatch, of the Scots Guards, who died after swallowing a, knife and other articles. He was court-martialled in October for striking -a comrade. While under detention at the barracks he suddenly; swallowed a seven-inch dinner knife. The Sergeant refused to believe the apparent fact, as Hatch seemed well. however, reported Hatch and when an X-ray operation was performed, thet knife was discovered, with a tootl* brush, twelve trouser buttons and two darning needles. The latter went right through the inestines. Twelve days after the operation Hatch died from peritonitis.
There was no evidence of a desire to commit suicide. Hatch affirmed that ho did not remember swallowing the articles, but doctors gave evidence that such swmllowing -was often a symptom of insanity, though there was no other trace of insanity in Hatch’s ease. —Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
