BEEF PRICES IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Tuesday. The Profiteering Prevention Court ordered reductions in the retail prices of beef in Sydney, ranging from a halfpenny to a penny per pound. Press Assn. MAS TEUTON CATTLE FAIR. The uncertainty of the beef market and the scarcity of money approaching the end of Hie financial year contributed to one of the p'oorcst sales of the season at the Columba road yards yesterday. There was an entry of 900 head of station cattle, most of them goodconditioned beasts, but a few poor and scrubby. Bidding was exceptionally slow. Eleven lots were passed in before a sale was effected. The first lot sold was 54 P.A. and Hereford cross Millocks from Mr F. Judd, which brought £5 12s; 22 3-year-old bullocks from Kopuaranga brought 4 os; 21 4-year-old steers, £4 10s; 10 empty cows with calves thrown in, £2; 25 18-month empty heifers (a good line), £2 15s; 9 store cows and one calf thrown in, £2 10s; 25 Hereford heifers in calf, £2 7s 6d.
The prices at which other lots were passed were:—2l fat and forward bullocks, £6; 35 empty heifers, £2 12s fid; 8 forward bullocks, £2 10s; 19 do., £, J2s fid; 6 good conditioned bullocks, £5 2s fid; 2fi empty cows, £2 15s; 9 forward bullocks,- £2 15s; 9 aged bullocks in good condition, £4; 5 bullocks, £2 15s; 2-year steers, £2 10s; 20 good bullocks, £2 ss; 28 2-year steers, £2 ss; 18 fat bullocks, £fi 9s; 28 21-year steers, £2 15a: 21 3-year steers, £2 18s; 27 empty Hereford heifers, r.w.b., with 25 calves, £2 12s fid; 25 Rereford heifers m calf, £2 7s fid. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report as follows:- —To a fair attendance of the public we submitted a small entry of good quality cattle. Bidding throughout was dull, and prices were lower than at recent sales. The bulk of our yarding we succeeded in quitting at the following prices:—3-off steers (fat ami forward), £5 15s to £6 4s; 4 and 5-year coloured bullocks, £4 to £5 10s; 2-year steers, £3; 2-year do. (small), £2 ss; 18-month Hereford cross heifers, £2 15s. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report: —We submitted a small entry of cattle to a good attendance. The sale was inclined to drag, but we managed to dispose of the whole of our entry. We quote:—2year steers, £2 8s fid to £2 11s; 24-year Hereford heifers, £3 1252 fid; Shorthorn bull, £i 10s.
