KISSING AT PUTIKI.

EPISODE IN A LANE.

YOUNG MAN' FINED £1

A yju.i: r man bashfully stood up bei or'! Mr X. A. D. Bailey, S.M., at the Wanganui Court on .Monday morning, t.o admit a c. erge of assaulting a young lady. 'lhe said assault was in tkei nature of having kissed her against her will at Putiki.

There were a number of people in the court when the nature of the charge was explained, and their laughter oniy served .to make the defendant appear more sheepish. The prosecution intimated that ono Saturday afternoon, when bees were softly buzzing and the birds were, twittering their sweet love songs in the trees, the young man and blushing maiden met at the end of a lane at Putiki, and so much in love was the young man that he could not resist the temptation of kissing her fervently, much against her will. He actually held her in his fond embrace for some time, sipping the sweet nectar. Mr Hussey, for defendant, jocularly remarked that some girls rather liked being kissed with no suggestion of any penalty. He went on to state that there were two classes of eases in which a defendant did not like to appear in Court, namely, when spoony letters were read out in divorces proceedings, and the other was where kissing was concerned. The young man in the present case intended to plead guilty, as he had no desire to embarrass ■ the young girl by asking her to appear in Court. He was extremely fond of the girl, and hoped lo prevail upon her ultimately to become his wife. The Magistrate: But he must not be too hasty. Defendant was then fined £1 without costs. If ;lie defendant adopts the good advice of Mr Bailey “not to bo too hasty,” the money spent in the fine may turn out to be a profitable investment and he may yet lead his blushing bride to the altar The little episode in the Putiki lane will then be one to joke about* in the quiet seclusiou of their own household. , • In the meantime the 20s fine will be handy for tlie Justice Department’s revenue, and probably could go towards buying a much overdue lawn mower to tackle the long grass surrounding the Court. —Wangftnui Herald.
