THE RAILWAY POLICY.

The people of New Zealand generally will approve of the criticism passed by the conference of commercial travellers at Christchurch on the railway policy of this country. As one delegate stated, the people of New Zealand resent the absolutely senseless way in which the railways are run. The Government is certainly not making the railways popular—the policy is decidedly in the opposite direction. The carriages on our railways arc, for the most part, old, uncomfortable and dirty. Those people whose misfortune it is to travel in the train between Wairarapa and Wellington can bear witness to the wretched service that this district is supplied with. The fact that the railways are losing £2OOO daily is the best evidence that could be produced as to the mismanagement that is going on. Cannot the Minister for Railways take some steps to improve our railway system! Arc there not sufficient capable men in the Railway Department to devise a policy which will make the railways pay, and at the same time give the public comfortable riding and good service? If there is not then the Government should dispense with the whole of the management and replace them with servants who possess the ability to provide the people of the Dominion with the kind of railway service which they have a right to expect.
