ENTERTAINMENTS.

SIGNOR NOTARIELLO. Taking the success of the first visit to Masterton of Signor Notaricllo as a criterion, there should be a large audience at the Opera House to-night, when the famous tenor and talented company make their reappearance. The tour of New Zealand lias been a. great success, large and appreciative audiences attending the concerts everywhere. The programme for tonight will be entirely different to that given on the first visit, and music lovers may look forward to another great musical treat. The box: plan is at the Bristol. THE OPERA HOUSE. COMMENCING THURSDAY NEXT. In “Blind Husbands,” the dowel photoplay to be shown at the Opera House on Thursday next, is seen an example of the pernicious male ‘vamp.’ His existence is directed toward “life, liberty and the pursuit, of women.” He is thei embodiment of mock courtesy,, he is a past master in employing the wiles that attract women, in short he is a super “he vamp.” Ho perverts the old Alpine adage “In the Alps there is no Sin,” deliberately misinterpreting its meaning to conciliate his All the women around a famous Alpine mountain resort are looked upon as his prospective prey. That vamp is Eric Steuben, formerly of the Austrian army, supposedly a victim of shell shock. He attempts to victimise the wife of an American surgeon. “Blind Husbands” is accorded a pace on the topmost rung of’ the ladder of cinema accomplishment by critics. It is the work of Eris Stroheim, Universal director, who wrote, directed and starred in the production. Prancclia Billingtou, Sam He Grasse and T. H. Gibson-Gow-land compose the able cast playing in his support. Reserves at Henderson’s.

PARAMOUNT THEATRE

“Brothers Divided,” at tbo Paramount-, reveals Frank Keenan, veteran actor and tried and popular favourite, in widely divergent roles of two brothers of opposite character; one is a mill-owner and slave driver, the other an ex-convict whose prison experiences have taught him that good deeds and kind words get a. more more our of life than selfishness and a nasty temper. Of course, everyone knows that moral point, but it takes a picture like this one to bring that point forcibly home, and in the hands of an actor like Frank Keenan the moral is made to get under the skin without any appearance of flaunting or tub-thumping. “BrothersDivided” is wholesome and timely, and has a sure object that should be welcomed everywhere. A two-reel comedy; a Gazette,'and the latest chapter of “The Lost- City” form an excellent supporting series.

COSY THEATRE.

There was a big crowd at; the Cosy Theatro on Saturday evening, when the new programme was greatly appreciated. Elaine Hammerstein has a highly sympathetic role in her latest Seizniek production, “Pleasure Seekers, ’’ which she handles with sweetness and reserve, carrying conviction all through by her splendid characterisation of the country girl who takes in hand and reforms a young man by marrying him. There are tense dramatic moments is the picture, on which the star ’s rare capability for handling emotional scenes shines, and there arc relieving touches of bright and clever comedy. It would be no exaggeration to say that never has this young and talented star boon seen to such advantage as in “Pleasure Seekers.” A lino array of supports includes humorous and topical items.
