Football and Hockey.

(By "Blue and Gold.")

r The Wairarapa and Bush senior representatives met at Alaslorton on Saturday afternoon in line weather. The ground was in geod order, and there was a large attendance. ihe Jin'sh. team were without their full strength, a notable absentee being Harvey, their best forward. Tho Bush team jumped off to the attack, and tho game had only been in progress about a minute when 1 • Galvin kicked a goal for. Bush from a free kick. Bush. 3.. , - Wairarapa 0

Wairarapa came away from the kick off, and good play by McArley, J. Donald and Bacon resulted iu Bush forcing. The Bush ■. - forwards then swept down the held, but B. Booth drove them back. Bush found the line well down. Then Jim Donald, by clever play, set the Wairarapa backs going, but bad passing nullified the advantage. Shortly after Jim Donald again tossed the ball out to the Wairaiapa backs, who swung away to the attack, Carson making a splendid run down the lane, being eventually grassed. The Bush forwards came away aa'id looked dangerous, but Matson saved. Wairarapa got the ball among the backs again,- and Bob Booth was conspicuous for good work, but the Bush full-back (Humphries), who was only a boy, brought him down with a great tackle. Bush were kept busy defending for a time and eventually forced. From a free kick from nearly halfway, Torrance just missed a goal, the ball striking the goal post, Wairarapa backs started a passing rush, but the Bush collaring was good, and progress waa stopped. The Bush forwards were making the pace willing, and running over ike Wairarapa pack. Bush worked the ball down the Wairarapa twentyfives, where Carson made a good run. Then Jim Donald, by a smart piece of play swung the ball out to the backs, and’it fell into the hands of F. Booth, who cut in smartly and scored a good toy. Torrance converted. The Bush forwards then came away in great style, and Wairarapa had a busy time defending. Raleigh failed with a penalty kick in a good position. Bush swept down to the Wairarapa line, and a Bush player missed a eer--tain score by slipping down when a yard from the line. Then Bush had a free kick right in front of the goal, but the kick was smothered through being taken too close to the opposing pack. Jim Donald, by good play, removed the scene of operations to the centre, where Desmond and Bacon put in great work which resulted iu Wairarapa attacking. Q. Donald and Strachey carried, play well down the field, where Wairarapa failed with a kick at goal. Bush forced. Wairarapa again set up an attack, Desmond, McArley Bacon and the Donald brothers putting in great work. Then Jim Donald was again conspicuous for a splendid piece of heady play. He whipped the ball out of B. Booth, who shot over the line near the goal. Matson converted. Wairarapa 10 Bush .... 3

Bush took advantage of poor passiag by the Wair<trapa backs ; and swept down the field. A race for. the ball saw Wairarapa force just in time. Bush later on forced, and half-time was called with the local team leading bj 10 points to 3. Play was of an interesting character in the second half, but good football was conspicuous by its absence. T e Wairarapa backs mulled many good opportunities during the spell, as did the Bush backs. Bush broke away at the start and nearly scored. The Bush forwards kept up the pressure, and, putting great vigour into their play, carried play to the Wairarapa line, where a Bush player was pushed out at the corner. Not to be denied, the Bush team kept up the pressure, and, their efforts were rewarded with a try, which was not converted. Wairarapa .... IP Bash .... 6 Wairarapa backs then came away, but once more faulty handling of the bad was in evidence. The Wairarapa forwards put in some great work ,at this period, but Bush came away again. Matson saved. Then a concerted rush by Wairarapa forwards carried play down field, when Jim Donald gathered in the ball and scored in a good position. The kick at goal failed, and the score stood — Wairarapa ..... 13 Bush .... 6 The rest of the spell was vigorously contested. Wairarapa added ten points (two converted tries), to their score, and Bush a try. McArley and Smith scored for Wairarapa, and Smith for Bush. Matson converted Wairarapa’s tries. The last Wairarapa try was the outcome of a tricky piece of unselfish play by Carson, who cut in. and beat three men, passing the ball

It rained throughout the game which was devoid of brilliancy. In the first stages the Springboks demonstrated their superiority in both vanguard and backs. Van Heerdcn, the hurdles champion at the Olympic games, played a dazzling wing game, scoring five tries by clever individualism, though he was opposite to Lane, who was somewhat weak on defence. At half (ime the score was 13 to 3 (two tries by Van Heerden and one by Meyer, G. Morkel converting two). Mingay kicked a penalty goal for N.S.W. When Van Heerden added three additional tries in the second spell Carr, the N.S.W. sprint champion,, exchanged places with Lane and terminated his scoring. N.S.W. strenuously endeavoured to get moving, but the determined tackling of the Springbok forwards blocked open play. Loose play in the N.S.W. 25 gave Meyer a further opening, which he accepted, making the total 25 to 3. N.S.W. then charged the 1 Springbox territory, Carr ultimately sprinting across.
