PROPOSED NEW STREET.

The proposal to put a new street through near the Fire Brigade Station from Queen street to Chapel street •was advanced another; stage-last- night,; when a petition was presented to the' Borough Council in connection with the matter., The public-spirited action of the petitioners in finding £2500 of the £5500 required for the work is deserving of'the highest commendation. Such action will go a long wav towards carrying • the proposal. The need for a new street as suggested is obvious to all who have given the matter any thought. The public at present use* the private land in the locality as if it were a.public thoroughfare; and pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles are to be seen going through this private property all day. It is only through the generosity of the owners of the land that the public are allowed this present convenience. The closing of the thoroughfare would undoubtedly Cfiu.se the public to make overtures of the Council to secure the land and make a new-street. As the proposal is one which will benefit the town and borough in more ways than, one, we are confident that the poll will be carried.
