SCHOOL BOOKS.

STANDARDISATION DESIRED. • MASTERTON A. AND PI REMIT. At the meeting of the General Committee of the Mastcrton Agricultural ?rnd Pastoral Association on Saturday last, Mr David Smith moved that a, remit be forwarded to the Agricultural Conference requesting the Government to standardise the school books through--out the Dominion. ' In speaking, to the motion, .Mr Smith said that it was a ridiculous policy which compelled a working man every time he moved to a new district to pa|udia.se a fresh set of books for his • tfSHjfren. Such a system was not only absurd but it was costly, and he was firmly of the opinion that the Government should have a uniform set of school books, from the North Cape to the Bluff. \ Mr Smith stated that a man moved from. Alfredton to Lansdowne with his family. He had to purchase a new set of books for his children at a cost of £3 15s. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Opaki, and it then became necessary fox the parents to purchase -a freshi set of school books. Mr D. Caselberg: “‘He is moving -about .-a lot” Mr Smith: “That may be, but a man smust follow his work. This was not vail done in one year.’” ifr Harper: ‘fls not the matter out■side the jurisdiction of the Association? <Qur Association is for the purpose of M dealing with agricultural and pastoral .matters, and not subjects relating to •education. We do not make any reconrmeritations to the Educational DepartySr Smith: “Two years ago a remit -went through dealing with higher education. What is the difference?” Mr MeKillop (chairman) said that he agreed with the motion. He thought that the association should take an interest in any matter of general interest. to the community. The motion was carried.
