RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

MR MILLER'S SELECTION. TRUST LAN US TRUST’S COXGRAT--3 ULATIOXS. At the meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last evening, Mr W. T. Grundy moved that a letter of congratulation be forwarded to Mr H. G. Miller, M.A.. expressing the great pleasure of the Trustees at the distinctive lioomu-: he had obtained in being selected as the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar', and stating also that the Trustees hoped that the Trust funds had been of some assistance to him in achieving that position. The motion whs seconded by the chairman, who said that they all rejoiced in M,r Miller’s success, which iunl brought credit upon the Trust,-and upon the Wairarapa district. It would also act as a stimulus to other young mon.

In addition to tho reference made in these columns yesterday concerning Mr Miller, it may bo stated that he was educated at Masterton District High School from .1905 to 1915, and at Victoria College from 1916 to 1920. He graduated in 1935, winning a senior scholarship in Economics, and passed his M.A. degree last year with firstclass honours in philosophy, and was awarded’a Jacob Joseph Research Scholarship and a free passage to England. Tu athletics he has distinguished himself as a footballer, being captain of the Wairarapa Public Schools fifteen in 1914-15, Wairarapa representative in 1916, and North Island University'Representative in 1920. He was also a member of the Victoria College cricket eleven. Mr Miller was also a member of the Bed Star Football Club in Masterton, and was at one time the youngest member on the Club’s books, joining when ten years of age. He has been for years past a playing member of the Carlton Cricket Club, Masterton, A few years ago, Mr Miller contributed interesting football and cricket notes to the Wairarapa Daily Times, and reported ' many club and representative matches for this paper in a manner which showed that he possessed considerable journalistic ability. In the social activities of Victoria College life he was runner-up in tho Plunket Medal contest of 191 S, president, of the Christian Union in 1919, and sub-editor of The Spike in, 1920 (having previously declined the editorship), besides taking a prominent part, in the preparation of the college extravaganzas, many of; the songs and “local hits” being composed by him. One of the proudest citizens in Masterton yesterday was Mr W. 11. Jackson, headmaster of the Masterton District High School, at whose school Mr Miller received the whole of his primary and secondary education. For years past , Mr Jackson has taken a special interest in Mr Miller, and in many directions lias boon of the greatest assistance to the Rhodes Scholar'in the pursuit of his studies.
