HIGH COST OF PAPER
THE CAUSE. “CORNERED” BY AMERICANS. “Of making books,” we arc told by a Scriptural writer- “there is no end.” But book publishing in London has reached a crisis which makes it possible that very soon the business will practically cease. Many publishers are feeling the pinch arising from the high cost of publishing and the scarcity of paper.
The world’s supplies of printing paper have, it is stated, been practically “cornered” for two years by American speculators. America is now importing rather than exporting paper, and Japan also. The toll taken bv Hie. American speculators upon the publishing world may be best gauged by the statement of a contemporary that the newspapers and other publications of Australia are paying £5,000,000 more annually for pa’peAhan before the war, hud the paper required for bag-making and other purposes represents a further increase of £5,004,000.
