CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) : CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. There was a new and Tather important development in connection with the oat market to-day, namely, the sale for Australian consumption of several substantial lines of both chaff and oats. The feed position in New South Wales is so grave at present that there is little doubt that practically all our oat and chaff production could be absorbed there without any difficutly at present prices, and it is in this respect that the deal opens up rather wide possibilities. The immediate result will be a firming in local prices. Sales recorded 1 to-day were on a basis of 5s lid, South Island, f.0.b., for B grade Cartons, equal'to 5s Id at country stations, and ,£lO 15s.(equal to about £7 10s at Country stations) for chaff. Whilst the lack of shipping is stagnating operations with the North Island there is little likelihood of this trouble presenting, itself with Australia. Potatoes. —The market is -much depressed. Yields of ten tons and over are quite general. Canterbury has had an unusually prolific crop, and, should the Australian embargo be continued for any length of time the result will be a probability of waste or low prices here. In the meantime farmers are pitting, though a fair amount of business has been done at £3 10s to £3 15s for immediate delivery. It is reported that onions are freely purchasable on a basis of £6 at country stations. The quality in some, cases is not very good, the onions having been left overlong in the open.
