Mr W. R. Kemball retorned to Masterton yesterday" fsom a visit to Austsalia. ;

Mr E. Richards, of Masterton, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned home yesterday.

Mr R. S. Hannah, assistant clerk, has been appointed clerk to the Masterton County Council,' returning officer and treasurer.

Mr A. Ross h.as been appointed delegate from the Gladstone branch of the Fanners’ Union to the annual conference at Feilding this month. Messrs A. Ross and R. Renall have been appointed Gladstone representatives on tlie executive of the Wairarapa Sub-Provincial district of the Farmers’ Union.

A cablegram from Ottawa states that General Sir Arthur Currie, Canadian Army- Commander-in-Chicf in France, lias accepted the principal ship of McGill University.

McArloy, general secretary of the Locomotive Engineers ’, > Firemen’s, and Cleaners’ - Association, who became ill just as fho railway strike was settled, is still confined to bed, but is making satisfactory progress. At a special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last evening, Miss Jessie Exell, who has[ been connected for a ,number of years'with the firm of Chamberlain Bros., was appointed to fill the vacancy on the borough office staff, caused by the - .resignation of Miss Vera Ring. ! j- ‘ . An informal little function was held at the,Returned Soldiers’ CJlub, Essex street, last evening, when a;number of ex-soldiers . entertained, Lieut.-Coloncl George Mitchell, M.P., at sdpper after his meeting. There were about thirtypresent, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr William John Birch, the first white settler in the Moawhango district, died this morning, after a long illness, aged 78, states a Marton telegram. Deceased acted as brigademajor under Colonel McDonnell in the Te Kooti troubles He was' the founder of the Farmers’ Union 'and took a keen interest in the Union from its inception.

Mrs C. Cole, of Masterton, received word to-day of the death of her brother, Staff-Sergeant Murdoch McLennan, eldest son of Mrs Annie Andrew, which took place at the Auckland Military Annexe this morning. The late Sergeant McLennan, who was in America when the war broke out. attached himself to the American Tank Corps, and had the honour of being the first soldier to take the American Stars and Stripes over the top. He was badly gassed during the war, and has. been for two years in the military hospital at Auckland. The deceased was about 40 years of age. General sympathy will be felt for the relatives in their sad bereavement.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council it was. decided, on the motion of the chaivmail. (Cr. W. ,J. Welch) to place on record its dee]) appreciation of the long and faithful services of the late clerk (Mr P. G. Moore). Cr. Welch stated that he had been for the past twenty-six ycats' closely associated in the work of the Council with the late Mr Moore, and he knew his time value. The late Mr Moore was a man who had never given offence, nothing had ever been a trouble to him, and he was devoted to his work. The motion was carried, all members standing in respect to the deceased gentleman.

At the- meeting of the Workers ’ Mutual .Benefit Building Society last' evening, a letter was reeeivel from Mr J. V. Gordon, regretting, that he was ompellcd to resign as a director, having decided to reside in Hamlton. The chairman, in moving the acceptance of Mr Gordon’s resignation, staled that Mr Gordon had been connected with the society since its inception, having been one of its first directors. He would move that a letter be sent to him thanking him for his past valuable services on the Board. This was carried, unanimously. Mr 11. 0. Fowles was elected director iu the place of Mr J. V. Gordon.

There was a large attendance at the Canterbury Press Club the other day, members entertaining their comrade, Mr Charles Redman (formerly of the staff of the Wairarapa Daily Times) who is leaving the Lyttelton Times Company to take up a position on the literary* staff of the Melbourne Heraid. Mr A. G. Henderson, president of the Club, and manager of the Lyttelton Times Company, in asking Mr Redman to accept, on behalf of the Club,, a small memento, referred to Mr Redman’s many good qualities, the thorough manner in which he did hif work and his generous and inanlv disposition, which had won the esteem of his fellows in a marked degree. Mi Redman, who was loudly cheered .thanked his comrades, and hoped h' would have as good a time in Me 1 bourne and meet as many good felows, as he had done in Christchurch An enjoyable hour followed.
