Sensational evidence was given at the trial of General Fournier and his subordinate officers for surrendering Maubeuge in September, 1914. , .. General Pau gave'evidence that Messiny, the Minister* for War, in 1914, was indignant at General Fournier’s insistent demands for assistance. He ordered General Pau to take command and shoot General Fournier. General Pau inspected the fortress and agreed with General Fournier respecting the defective defences of the fortress, which could not stand a siege of ten days. Instead of shooting him,. General Pau recommended General' Fournier for promotion.
