INFLUENZA.
POSITION AT CHRISTCHURCH. SPREAD OF THE MALADY. < (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. To-day’s figures, show that influenza of a fairly mild type is spreading, since noon yesterday until noon to-day 120 fresh notifications from the whole of the Canterbury and Westland districts have: been received by the Health Department. The hew| case sare made up as lollows: —Xov.tli Canterbury 102, South Canterbury 16, Ashburton 2. Of the 102 cases reported in North Canterbury, 99 are in Christchurch, and, of these three are pneumonic. Two fresh pneumonic cases arc reported from South Canterbury. All the city schools will close to-mor-row for at least a fortnight. Dr. Chesson. who is now acting as District Health Officer ffr Canterbury, in conjunction with Dr. Teiford, told a reporter that, owing to Die number of school children affected by the present outbreak of influenza, it had been deemed advisable to close the remainder of the schools within an eightmile radius of the square. At the same time arrangements wore being made for the exclusion of children of school age from the picture theatres. ‘‘There is no cause for alarm in the present position in Christchurch,’.’ continued Dr. Chesson, “though the cases are of a moderately sharp type.”' SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AFFECTED It was reported by the attendance officer at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Education Board that the attendance at the. schools throughout the Wellington)-district had been' considerably affected during the 1 past month through irifluema.
