PETITION BEING SIGNED. . The following petition to the Mayor and Borough Council is being largely sighed by the ratepayers of Msisterton: —“We, the undersigned ratepayers of the borough of Masterlou, hereby petition y-ou: That you take the necessarysteps to acquire the land for and to construct a cross street from Queen street to Chapel street, through part Section 16, Masterton,- and to take a general poll for the loan for such purposes. Your petitioners understand that the estimated cost, of the acquisition, of land and complete construction of the streets is under £5500. Your petitioners are further informed that contributions in cafeh towards the street will be obtained .from persons whose properties will be especially benefited by the work, to the extent of £2500, leaving the nett cost to the borough as a whole approximately £SOOO. Your petitioners poini mil that if buildings are erected on the vacant lands, the present opportunity of cheaply acquiring this .very necessary street will be finally gone.’ Your petitioners do not think it necessary to stress the verygreat convenience this street will be to the inhabitants of the borough generally-, nor the additional security it will afford by enabling the fire brigade to get quickly- away- to extinguish fires on properties in Chapel street and streets opening off Chapel street.
