PROPOSED NEW STREET.

Those citizens who are petitioning the Borough Council to take a poll on the proposal to put a street through from Queen street, opposite the Fire Brigade station, to Chapel street, are now*'going the right way to secure the accomplishment of their object. The method proposed —that those who will directly benefit by the putting through of the new street shall contribute a substantial share of the cost—is one which we have consistently advocated. .{The value of property in the vicinity will be increased by the hew-street, and it is only fair to the ratepayers as a whole that those persons should be prepared to provide a portion of the cost. Had such a policy been adopted when the Joan proposals were previously put before the ratepayers, the new street would now have been an accomplished fact. The formation ,of this - street will naturally enhance th<* value of property in the vicinity, and the increased revenue thereby made available, in the shape of higher rates will very soon Ue sufficient to provide interest and sinking fund on a loan of, say, £3OOO, which, added to the £2500 donated by owners of property* will produce the amount required to bring the new street intd being. Under the circumstances no ratepayer can conscientiously refrain from voting iu favour of the proposal. The street will lie paid for by the promoters, by their donation of £2500, and by increased rates that will follow enhanced value of their properties, so, as the proposed street will be of value to the whole '.town, the ratepayers generally will really be indebted to the promoters of the scheme.
