THE PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Can you, or aiiy/if your realtors, give me some idea of what are thu .. aims of the Masterton Progressive League.’ I have been trying to discover i or some months now, but have failed. 1 paid my subscription to become a member (but have mat yet received & receipt) with a view of making one to try and help our town, if that' is their earnest desire. But I am very much in doubt. When, according to a newspaper repiort, the executive, without consulting any meeting of members,, have decided to print a pamphlet about our town and district, with the object of increasing our population, when today there is scarcely a rabbit hutch or fowl house to hire for people to live iu - during the coming winter. At their M last meeting the Borough Council was, c criticised for'Star Chamber methods, and yet the executive of this League double the salary and reappoint a secretary of their own without consulting’ the members, and now are going to publish a pamphlet off their own bat. The next thing the members of the League no doubt will hear that the executive have decided to start a gasworks of their own, they will soon require it, anyway. There is plenty of useful _ work to Jo for the benefit of our progressive town, but the League will not tackle it. Is it composed of a body of discontented men, or wliat is wrong? With a great'flourish of trumpets recently They .launched a splendid scheme, to start " a first-class hotel,” but had 1 not the grit to carry it through. Wo . certainly require a live association to h U ck up and help those who are quietlydoing good work iu our town, and also to fiillow up the work of our Council, so that when any new scheme is about to be undertaken a lead can be given to the public. The Progressive League could tackle the housing question, and t ,;he large employers to build houses tor their workmen, the railway authorities for their employees, the Gov- o eminent for the Post Office staff, and 1 show the public how they can help by oiniiig members of our building soeiViies, also the cost of living, and prove t 0 the public, they are trying to make our sidendid town an even better place t 0 I've in. They could also bring the .rood work bring done, say, by the Fire Brigade. St. John Ambulance, the Frit ndiv Societies, the Bands, before the public, so that full support would be given. They could turn their attention to a town fire insurance company t 0 reduce the heavy.rates now being ~a i d, but if they keep on passing resolutions to <io this and then that, and have not the grit to carry anything through, the sooner some live ratepayers get to work and form a live society the better. —I am, etc., F. NORRIS. # -Masterton, April 19th, 1920.
