NO CAUSE FOR ALARM FROM SUNSPOTS.
The following cablegram, dated Dβsember 13th, has been received by the ••■Soveriinient Astronomer from the Director af Agriculture, Suva:--" Letter jonblished local press from Clement ' predicting violent seismic dis■*arbances commencing about December 17th has aroused considerable alarm. - Tins' Government would appreciate any izniformation you could supply by cable ■ •.•an the matter. ,, Mr G. Hogben, Government Seismolo--afiet. having been asked for his views on tie matter, submitted yesterday the ■.following report to the Government:— -■"It has been proved again and again ■■ahat sunspots and other astronomical do not cause earthquakes. ■ The causes of earthquakes are within *tne earth, not outside it; It would be a rare coincidence even if one of the fci" earthquakes that are constantly happening were to fall on December 17th. No one can foretell earthquakes ■•.5n the way Wragge claims to do, therefore there is no special cause for alarm •-.on the 17th." This information Sir Francis Bell has » conveyed to the Colonial Secretary, I -.^Sava.
