Mr Fred Moore, of Wanganui, ia on a visit to Masterton.

Dr. P. R. Cook has been appointed district commander of tho Boy Scout movement in Masterton.

Mr O. Pragncll, who has been for twelve years chairman of the Masterton Fire Board, has resigned owing to ill-health.

A cable received yesterday stated that Gunner Len Nicol, of Maatertoii, will leave England for New Zealand on June 20th.

Mr W. E. Jackson, manager for New Zealand of Messrs Gordon and Gotch Propy., Ltd., was on a short visit to Masterton to-day.

The chairman (Cr W. J. Welch) has been appointed to represent the Masterton County Council at the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties 5, Association.

Miss R. Chapman, who has been on the local staff of the telephone exchange for the last seven and a-halt" years, has received notice of her transfer to Palmerston North, and will leave for that town on Friday next.

The friends of Mr and Mrs K. MeBean Stewart, of Worksop Road, Masterton, will learn with regret of the death of their only son Edric ("Paddy"), which occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday afternoon. Deceased was eight years of age.

Brigadier-General N. B. Hudson, Royal Berkshire Regiment, aged 25, is believed to be the youngest general in the army. Brigadier-General R. V. Bradford, V.C., who was killed in 1917, attained tho rank at the same age. Two of three brothers of General Hudson were killed in the war.

Mr Robert O. Smith, the newly-elect-ed member for the Upper Riding of tho Masterton County Council, took his seat for the first time at tho County Council meeting yesterday and was congratulated by the chairman upon nis election. The chairman said that with his business experience Air Smith should make a useful member of tho Council. Mr Smith suitably replied.

In duly last year Messrs Alfred Watkirison and Frank Humphries, students of Mr S. R. Kingdon, sanitary inspector, at the plumbers' class at the Masterton Technical School, entered for the second grade plumbers' examination of the City and Guilds of London Institute. Word has now been received of the success of both candidates. Misses Doris A. Permain aud Elsie M. Jones, also Technical School students, were accorded a second-class pass for theoretical and practical dressmaking on. the London examination conducted at the same time.

His friends think he will very likely be named for Russia's first president. An interesting function took place at Knox Hall, Masterton, yesterday, when in the presence of tho Wairarapa Presbytery and the members of the Ladies" Missionary Presbyterial Association, the Rev. \i. 11. Catherwood, on behalf of the Moderator of tho General Assembly, presented Mrs Page (formerly of St. Leonard's, Duncdin, but now of Masterton), with a handsome ' gold wristlet watch bearing the following inscription:—"Presented by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to Jessie Page for heroic service at Featherston Military Camp, 1919." In making the presentation, the Rev. Major Catherwood spoke of tho almost incredible devotion of Mrs Page at a time when 700 men in camp were stricken down with influenza, and the influence she exerted over many a lonely soldier in the camp while suffering from the dreaded scourge. Mrs Page mad': a reply expressing gratitude for the handsome gift. Mrs Page was recently the recipient at the hands of the Gov-ernor-General of the Dominion of the M'.B.E. Order.
