WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH THE KAISER?

There are things at which we grumble when we think they're going wrong, Aud at things that's done we fret and fume and fuss, And we think we're great, at judging, wheu with condemnation strong We proelam how \v{j'<l despatch each wicked cuss. Some seek for satisfaction by letting loose their spleen, And in fancy grind their foe beneath their heel; But a little more relleclion shows how hasty they have been, Such vengeance cannot make the guilty feel. Then there's the namby-pamby persons, who wouldn't hurt a lly, No matter what do-jtivirtion had been wrought. They'd forgive the greatest violence and let the deed go by. And trust, in heaven that justice will lie brought. So the latter he does nothing, while the former he goes wrong; Blow for blow no'ir puts the mind in steep. And the whining nin-rcsister never helps the world a bug — He's contented it; you let him browse and sleep. But, before wo pass the sentence we should measure up the crime. And wheu we've found each person's right fill share, Tien place the load upon him and give the culprit time To free .himself, or else his burden bear. There are those Avho talk of torture and those who talk of death, And those who talk ot' life-long mental fear, But no crime can be atoned for, until with every breath The culprit tries his guilty soul to clear. .For it's not on wrathful vengeance, nor ou pardoning offence, That justice here or anywhere depends; But iv gauging wilful evil, and awakening the sense Of conscious guilt, and power to make amends. —W.
