THE JUGO SLAVS.
DEFYING THE AUTHORITIES.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday.
The majority of tho Jugo-Slavs who' have been required to perform national service under the regulations appear to have decided to defy the authorities.
A very largo number of these aliens w-as given leave of absence from various works when the epidemic was prevalent, and at Christmas they did not return to work. Commissioner Cullcn annunced they would bo given until January 27th to return, but there has been no response.
It is known to the authorities that many have ' ' disappeared with the intention of doing no more Government work, and others are sheltering behind medical certificates, which the authorities believe have been rather easily received in some quarters.
What course of action is to bo taken to deal with these defaulters is now being considered.
This morning information was received that a party of Jugo-Slavs employed on the- works near Paeroa "struck work," but no details are yet to hand.
