WAIRARAPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly mooting of th 0 Council was held in Cartcrtou on Saturday, the chairman (Cr. W. Persy) presiding. There were present:—Cra. M. J. McGregor, J. Strang, C. A. Cameron, T. V. Moore, G. Stevens, 1 , . Court and H. Hodder.

The treasurer reported that receipts since last meeting had been £GS2 13 S 4d. The balance stood at cr., £30 3s sd.

J. Cross, To Wharau, wrote asking the Council to consider tho matter of putting a footbridge over Jackson's creek," the plank which at present serves this purposo boing a positive danger. —Decided to give tho matter attention and make the bridge safe.

The Whangaroi County Council wrote, asking this Council to support a resolution objecting to tho settlement of returned soldiers on inferior and unsuitable land. The chairman stated that the matter liad already been dealt witlx by the Patriotic Society and Efficiency Board. Tho position as far as this dis. trict was concerned is quite satisfactory. He moved that the letter be received. Cr. Moore seconded. —Carried.

The Waitomo County Council wrote asking this Council's support to a resolution providing for native representation on councils where there are a certain number of natives. —The Council was of opinion that tho matter did not interest this district. —Tho letter was received.

The Department of Public Health wrote, reporting a case of diphtheria at AMaruhe, and asking that certain work bo carried out in order to improve the condition of tho building.—Cr. Moore did not see why tho report should bo sent to tho Council. It was not their house nor in their occupation. Tho local inspector evidently had a misconception of his duties. He reported direct to the Department instead of to the local bod. ics. Ho moved that tho letter received bo sent to the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, asking for an explanation of the inspector's action. He noticed that the same condition of affairs existed with th 0 Carterton Borough Council. —Cr. Terry seconded.— Carried.

It was decided to hold a special meeting of the Council on Monday, August sth, at 1.30 p.m., when the patriotic resolution affirming the intention of the peoplo to see tho war through, to a victorious issue will be passed.

The ranger reported that during tho month he had dealt with 15 horses and 56 head of cattle. —The Council expressed their satisfaction with the work of the ranger.

H. R. Burgess waited upon the Council asking that the water race flume be. tween the properties of himself and Herrick be lengthened aaid made fit to do its work. At present it was a great nuisance. The race from his place to Edward's was very dirty and wanted clearing out. —Tho chairman pointed out that the difficulty was to get the labour to do the necessary work. It was decided to send the water race overseer to see Mr Burgess, and do what can be done.
