The French offensive this morning north-west of Montdidier commenced on a four-miles front. They captured the villages of Aubvillers, Sauvillers, and Mongival in the first hour.. The violence of the enemy's artillery as increasing, and his resistaace is stiffening. Tho Americans captured Buzaucy, bringing them half a mile beyuml the Soissons-Chateau Thierry road. They also captured Jaulgonne. Tho* French are experiencing great difficulties in forcing a passage further along the Marne Valley, owing to the onemy's resistance. .The French stormed the heights of .Oourcclles yesterday and crossed the ifilarno at Pout Abinson, west of Reuil. Tho enemy launched a heavy counter attack from the direction of Vendicrs, jsyhich was beaten off. The British troops south-west of Kheims captured Petit Champ Wood, aiear Marfaux. The situation is still favourable, but rwo must not expect rapid dcvolopjmonts. Thero are indications that the enemy fs evacuatng the bottom of the pocket, ■Witch has become too hot, and we may -take up a natural line of defence like Pie rivers Andre or the Vcsle.
