CONDITIONS IN GERMANY.

The cables to-day again give us a_ lot of nonsense concerning the conditions in Germany. This time we are told that the authorities have warned tlie people of Germany that if .more of the inhabitants do not go barefooted, compulsion will be resorted, to-' What utter rubbish! ' In the' first place the Germans would take all sorts of fine care that such a statement, if true, -would not reach th e outside world. If Germany allowed the report to circulate outside Hunland, then we may be sure that it is not true, and that the Hun authorities have some particular object in view in spreading the statement. The intermil conditions in Germany arc, no doubt, serious, but to talk of starving Germany into submission is ridiculous. The scientists, of. Germany will see to it that substitutes for ; leather aud certain kinds of clothing are provided for the people. The, field of battle is the only place where Germany -will be defeated in this war. Once the Huns suf. fer a heavy defeat, on the western front, then we may look to the conditions in Germany proving of assistance to the Allies in securing a final victory.
