ENEMY ATTACK SMASHED

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Wednesday. A correspondent with the British JUeadquarters says: The enemy's attack yesterday, north-west of La. Vacquerio, : was carried out after a tierce bombardment. Tho attack was concentrated on a half-mile front. Waves advanced under the cover of Jlaiunienw'orfers, and parties swarmed into a short length of our trenches on the right. Elsewhere they were unable to rush the parapet in the face of our heavy -.machine gun and. rifle lire. Whilst our supports were organising a counter-attack our gunners put UP a Jiorce barrage, driving the enemy to «-over. The result wa.s that- we took tho ■whole.of the trenches the Germans had carried. It was a very straggling remnant of ■f.he original storming companies which mot bade across "'No Man's' Land." The New Tear was ushered in according to custom. At midnight, groups of our batteries j !il over salvoes of high explosives. "-which burst a. dozen times, intimating *hat it was l'J o'clock. Other gunners joined, punctually tiring the indicating numerals of li'lS from tho British Headquarters, after which a bouquet of gas shells was sent speeding to bid I'Vitz a happy New Year. This form, of greeting was resented iv pome places, and a quarrel between the .heavy guns is blazing up.
