On Thursday, evening the Masterton Central Band' (private) will tender a farewell social to Bandsman W. James, who has enlisted.

The Wairarapa Caledonian Society, at its meeting la-st night, passed a vote of condolence to the relatives of the lato Mr G. Wyeth.

The death occurred'in Wellington this week of Mrs Gwyuiie, formerly matron of the Masterton Hospital. Her husband. Air William Gwynne, predeceased her by five days.

Mr Tom Pollard, the veteran producer, has undertaken the stage management for the comic opera, "H.M.S. Pinafore," now being produced in Christchurch in aid of the Naval Heroes and Tied Cross funds.

The friends of Mr and Mrs Thos. Ridgway will regret to learn of the death of their sou Tommy, which took place this morning. Tho little boy, who was eight years of age, was suffering from measles. The funeral will leave the residence, Dixon street, at 10 o 'clock on Tuesday morning.

A Nelson telegram states that word has been received that Lieutenant Athol Hudson, son of the late Dr. Hudson and Mrs Hudson, of Tapawera, has beeu killed in action. Lieut. Hudson was an old boy of Nelson College and Waitaki High School. He was selected in 1915 as the Rhodes Scholar from Victoria College.

Privates 0. W. Foreman, E. L. Foroman, B. Goodin, 11. Reeves, F. Gray and P. Gray -were entertained at a farewell social by the residents of Parkvale last night, and presented -with a wristlet watch each, and also with a parcel of comforts from the Carterton branch of the Liverpool Committee.

The late Mrs 1). Sullivan, -who died in Wellington, left the following family:—Messrs Cam and Len Sullivau (Wellington), "Fred Sullivan (Napier), Mesdanies Wilkinson (Wellington), Sutton (Wellington), Greatbatch (Tcmii), F. Y. Kempton (Greytown), Holmes (Carterton), and Miss Vida Sullivau.

Private Arthur Spratt, of Masterton, who has been lighting in the present war ever since the landing of the Anzacs at Gallipoli, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant, and is now attached to the Headquarters Staff in France. In a letter to his brother, received this week, Sergeant Spratt said he was about to go on leave for a short while to England. Mr J. A. Betts, who recently resigned as auctioneer of the Daunevirke branch of the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Co-operative Association to accept an appointment as manager in Pahiatua for the Wairarapa Fanners' Co-opera-tive Association, was tendered a farewell social and made a presentation at Dannevirke. Mr 11. Hart, who for seven years past has been manager of the Pahiatua branch of the Wairarapa Farmers' Association, is vacating the position at the end of this month. Mr Hart intends joining one of the. Reinforcements. He will be succeeded by Mr W. Thompson, who is at present occupying a temporary position with tho firm in Wellington. Mr Thompson formerly resided in Eketahuna for several years.
