ZEPPELIN FINDER.
AIR WAVES RECORDED AND
MAGNIFIED
A system by which approaching Zeppelins can be located is claimed to havo been discovered by Dr Leo do Forest, the famous American in%'entor, who arrived in London last month.
"My invention, which I am submitting to the British Government, is a protective, not .a destructive, device," said Dr de Forest to a Daily Express representative. "It will give warning of tho approach of Zeppelins, and so allow them to be met by aircraft or gunnery fire before they can do any harm.
"My device will record air waves made by Zeppelins on a microphone. These air waves will bo magnified by tho audion amplifier, for which I am the inventor, until they are of sufficient force to bo registered.
"The system is conducted in much the same way as the British Navy uses the microphone to record the approach of a submarine. It works better at night, because the motors of a Zeppelin allow a greater registration of sound with the reduction of noises.
"I cannot, for obvious reasons, go into fuller details of my invention, except to say that it can with advantago replace an aerial guard from London to the coast. However weak tho electric currents transmitted by tho microphone are, the audion amplifier will intensify them a thousand times. "
Dr de Forest, who lias been working on wireless experiments for a number of years, was interested in the recent successful tests of wireless telephony from Arlington, near Washington, to the Eiffel Tower, Paris.
