Some interesting figures have been compiled by a Continental military authority on the forces of the Allies and those of German, Austria and Turkey. Russia, he states, has an estimated population of 140,000,000. The total strength of her available army is estimated as follows:—First lino troops, 4,000,000; second line troops, 0,000,000, making a total of 10,000,000. Deduct total loss es to November 20th, in killed, wounded, and captured, 2,430,000, and tho total reserved for homo defences and at bases 3,100,000, leaving a total available and subject to gradual depletion of 10,500,000. The estimated total number of lighting men for the Allies on November 20th was 0,400,000, or 01 polecat of the available number. Germany, with a population of 06,000,000, was estimated to havo a "perfect military organisation" as follows: — First lino troops, 3,500,000; second line troops 3,500,000; total, 7,000,000. Deduct losses to November 20th in killed, wounded and captured, estimated at 2,000,----000, of whom, say, 24 per cent were only temporarily incapacitated, leaving a net total of losses of 1,700,000, and, say, 15 per cent for horn:' defences, bases," to SOO,OOO. This left still availablo on November 20th 4,;>uO,UUiJ, of whom 3,000,000 were fighting on that Austria-Hungary, with a population of 50,000,000, had available forces as follows:—First line, 1,800,000; .second line 3,200,000; total, 5,000,000; deduct losses, say, 30 per cent in killed, wounded and captured 1,500,000, and, say, 20 per cent for home defences, bases, etc., 700,000, leaving still, available on November 20th, 2,800,000. The. number of Austrian fighting men on that date was estimated at 1,700,000 of the "probable availables." Turkey, with a "practical" population of 2,750,000, was estimated to have an available free on November 20th of 300,000.
